Hello, writers. Thank you all so much for the good wishes, and thank you mettle fatigue for taking the wheel on a moment’s notice and steering the ship for four straight weeks, and thank you strawbale for filling in as well.
My mother is once again recovering after the rehab center she was sent to made a mistake, and I am now busy looking for another rehab center. My jaw hasn’t been unclenched for a month.
In the midst of all this, which sometimes involves as much as nine nerve-wracking hours a day on the phone, more than one person has asked me, “So, are you at least getting some writing done?”
A couple days ago a friend who’s a sculptor said “At least when you’re not on the phone you can write, and relax.”
Is there anybody here who’s not rolling their eyes along with me?
I think that a musician, or a dancer, or maybe different kinds of visual artist (I’m not sure about the latter) can relax and de-stress by working. But I don’t really know a writer who can.
Maybe it depends on the kind of writing you do. Maybe freewriting? Or just typing words? Might that be de-stressful, if you knew there was never going to be an audience?
Tonight’s challenge:
Think of a very calm place.
Think of how it smells, sounds, tastes, and feels.
Now show a character moving through, across, or into that place.
The character is afraid of something.
Show us how the place affects him/her.
Try to limit yourself to 100 words.
Write On! will be a regular Thursday feature (8 pm ET 5 pm PT) until it isn't.
